It's Time to Get Ready for Spring!!

I was going to do a new year new start post but what do you know it's almost February now.  The days have been flying by and before we know it our weekend is over and it's back to the grind and another week has passed.  Since we didn't get a chance to process the log load last year we've picked up doing that again.  We need to keep our little ones warm so we have to process at least half a cord a week.  Plus now that spring is getting closer, I'm counting down the days until I get to begin my seedlings.

Our hopes for this year is that we get truck loads of vegetables.  Our goal is to provide fresh veggies to our family and friends.  Not everyone has the opportunity to grow their own veggies so we look forward to sharing.  We've been putting in a lot of sweat and time the last few years in the garden and haven't got out of it what we want.  Our plan of attack for this year is a few changes. First of all we've decided to build raised beds.  Our soil is a gardener's nightmare, it's ridiculously hard and I don't think there's enough alpaca poo to break it down and improve it.  Now we'll be able to bring in some beautiful soil and also build barriers over the beds to keep those pesky animals away from our crop.  Plus for our tomato plants we're going to put up some shade cloth.  Year after year we get tomatoes but they don't ripen.  I've looked up a couple of reasons for this and one of them is too much heat, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed this works. One of my big goals is to can tomatoes this summer until I can't stand the sight of them.

One of our other missions we've been saying we're going to do and have yet to accomplish is an orchard.  I've put in an order for 8 fruit trees. We picked apple, peaches, cherries and pears to start out.  I know it will be a few years before we get to enjoy their harvest but it will definitely be worth the wait.  I was able to get my hands in the dirt a little by planting some bulbs.  I'm so thrilled to see the color they'll add to our scenery.  I'm hoping the bees and butterflies love them too.

We are slowly chipping away at our winter to do list.  Our greenhouse is in need of some attention, along with trimming trees on the homestead and a few other odds and ends.  With the rain and a baby it can be challenging to get outside and get things done.  While the baby naps and the clouds clear up we run out and get it done, even sometimes in the freezing rain because that's life on the homestead.

The Tale of Two Goats

Well we've had Lily and Belle for two weeks now and they are doing wonderful.  I had a bit of a scare when we picked them up from the eccentric goat breeding lady.  The lady picked up one goat and Casey picked up the other one and when he put them in the back of the car Belle let out this horrific scream, the goat not the lady.  Casey says I froze up and my eyes were all bugged out..I don't recall this but he is still getting a kick out of it.  I did stop for a second because I thought she was hurt.  She was just pissed we were taking her away from her family. The car ride home.            When we got them home and let them lose onto the back of our property they dashed for the fence and wanted nothing to do with us.  They relaxed more as the day went by and will come up to us and sniff us.  All the work we put into making them a comfy shelter/bed and they wouldn't sleep in it...they are usin...

Sick Days on Homestead?

I know I know it's been like two weeks and trust me I would have rather been blogging than what I was dealing with, the cold from hell.  I've had colds before who hasn't, but this isn't like any other cold it has like super powers.   It started on Memorial day with lil man just having an itty bitty cough, next day full cold and since it's trickled down the whole family.  Little lady was second, then myself, and now it has taken over poor Papa.  Of course when it took over me it was the beginning of Papa's work week.  Being a mom is a hard job but when you're sick and the kids are sick it becomes ten times worse plus you add the chores of the homestead and it feels like I'm being asked to climb a mountain. Plants keeping growing even when we're sick.      I've found myself jealous at times of some of the bigger homestead/farms we follow on Instagram until I felt like I was dying then I was so happy we're just starti...

Long Story Short

Well its been well over a year since I last showed my face on here and I'm not sure where the time went. Last year was full of changes some good and some not so great.  But I won't bore you with the specifics, let's just say hello again and see what's new.      The biggest change of all is our new business venture, metal signs and decor. We take sheets of steel and turn them into signs, ornaments, home decor and even brackets using a plasma table.  Deciding on that purchase was life changing and one of the many reasons life was in the fast lane these last 18 months.  I had no idea what we were getting into or what the response would be, but so far we've had positive feedback. Plasma table hard at work, cutting some steel.      We've done some shows, selling our metal art and now we've got an online shop on etsy to check it out click here,  along with selling locally at The Coop de Ville and Forged n Found....
