DIY Chicken Coop Remodel

Who doesn't love fresh eggs these days? When we started our homestead we had our own chickens but had to get rid of them last summer.  Of course we missed having fresh breakfast but we also missed having our ladies (that's what we call them) around. But before we could get new chicks we needed a new chicken coop because we weren't able to keep them in the same location.  I'm not sure if you've seen the price of new coops but this Mama keeps her purse strings tight and I wasn't about to fork out that much cash.  So our plan was to build our own coop, that was until I was scrolling Facebook's marketplace.  Not sure who else scans FB marketplace for useful free items but this homestead Mama loves the free stuff.  Back to my story, I came across a free chicken coop that looked promising. Then the hard part convincing the hubby that we needed to stop what we were doing to run into town and pick it up. He was actually easily convinced and we all ju...

Greenhouse is Ready for Business

Drum roll please...the greenhouse is finished, not just a few more things to do but all the way done.  I've been filling it up with my plants and I look around and I'm still in shock that we built it from some pieces of lumber.  The hubby did most of the work but without an awesome assistant he still might be working on it, just kidding. I never imagined us actually building one, we have what the old owners left behind and I was alright with it.  Now looking at my oh so beautiful barn style greenhouse I can't believe I would have settled for less. The old one was like a quarter of the size, leaking all over, dark and squirrels were constantly sneaking in.  Here's the  link  to the plans we used, thanks  Ana White  for the awesome plans. It's a beauty and filling up fast.      The last few touches were completed this week...spray foam insulation, shelves, door trim, and door threshold.  We bought a ...

We've been Bizzy Lil Bee's Lately

Homestead life has been keeping us busy for the last month. If you follow us on Facebook  you've been seeing everything we've been up to. Every week there's a list of chores that need to be done, most weeks we are successful in checking all items off.  In the last month we've been working on getting prepared for our bee's arrival, taking care of our seedlings, repairing a camper for camping adventures, along with our everyday chores of life.            Since our wallet isn't too big and papa is quite the handy man we were able to pick up unassembled bee hives at a local mill works Shastina  for a great price.  The guy who assisted us was informative and funny, wish we could hang out with him and learn more. We'll definitely make another stop there if we need more supplies. For the rest of our supplies like our suit and tools we shopped around for the best price, I'm all about making my dollars stretch. Glue, p...

Absolutely Free DIY Home Decor

I recently put up two photo collages that had been put away since we moved, going on 4 years now.  I love the idea of them and  there's so many older pictures on them from before the digital camera came along.  My only issue with them is that they don't fit in with our decor, plus we've out grown them...we aren't in our early 20s anymore.  They don't say grown up to me they say dorm room or just starting out. But I love displaying our pictures without having to empty my wallet out for 100s of frames.  I came up with what I have to say was a brilliant idea. This last spring I found an ad on Craigslist for a ton of old windows for free and I was lucky enough to snatch them all up. Some of  the windows were missing their glass or broken so I chose one of them.  It took me most of the summer with five minutes here and there to remove broken glass and clean it up a little.  Here's what window looked like, the BEFORE. ...

New Blog Site

So as you can see we've relocated where we blog.  We want to keep everyone updated on what we are doing on the homestead and the last blog site was making it too difficult. Our garden has been keeping us busy the last couple of weeks. We direct sowed our peas, onions, beets, and leafy greens into their appointed rows for this season.  I'm super duper excited to see some of them sprouting from the ground. We transplanted our tomatoes into the garden but unfortunately either the deer or the darn squirrels got their grubby little paws on them.  We are hoping that they grow back soon.  My handy hubby put together a motion activated scarecrow to hopefully keep those critters out of the garden.  Here's a link to our you tube video so you can see it in action  here. Yesterday we had quite a productive day on the homestead.  We transplanted 14 cucumber, 8 zucchini, a few pumpkin and watermelon plants.  To help them get established before any wildlife ...
