Busy Planting

We had a busy week of planting and finishing up fencing in the garden this last week.  Not sure if I mentioned that the deer ate all our tomatoes for dinner before we put up the sprinkler scarecrow.  It made me so sad, we put so much time and love into growing those plants from seeds.  My hubby keeps reminding me though that gardening is a trial and error process.  We are definitely not professionals but we are constantly learning. Luckily we do know someone who is amazing at gardening and she gave us some of her extra tomato plants she started.  She's a giver and usually gives us some of her starts every year.  She also gave us some more of the plastic raised beds we put in last week.

It was time to put transplant some more of our starts into the garden so we loaded up our homestead rig and headed for the garden.

I worked on the tomato plants while the hubby worked on the swiss chard, bok choy, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli.  I know it seems like he did most of the work but I was determined to make sure those pesky deer didn't get my tomatoes again so I had to make barriers for them.  I put tomato cages over the tomatoes and then cut chicken wire to wrap around them.  I also made barriers for the cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and broccoli by wrapping chicken wire in a circle and then bending the top over itself.  It may seem like I'm going a bit overboard but I'm tired of putting so much work and time into this and not getting any produce.

Our strawberries are doing good so far and so are our potatoes.  We are trying something different this year with our potatoes.  Last year we tried potato cages but it didn't produce the amount of potatoes we were expecting because we believe the dirt got compacted.  This year we just planted our first layer of potatoes and once they sprout we will cover them with dirt and repeat with each layer.  So far the potatoes are doing fantastically good, it's funny there were a few that sprouted in last years spot.  I dug up the potatoes that sprouted in the pea beds and moved them.

Aren't those potatoes a beautiful site...I'm a potato loving girl, I can't wait to enjoy them in my tummy!!

The hubby is becoming a fast fencer these days.  He finished up putting up the small fence in front of the taller fence.  Our little farmer boy is helping out quite a bit too.  He loves "helping" his papa build fences.  We've got some more planting to do this week.  Some of our cucumbers didn't enjoy the quick heat we got last week so we need to sow some seeds plus I've got some flower seeds to plant.  Off to rest now for a busy homesteading day tomorrow.

The Tale of Two Goats

Well we've had Lily and Belle for two weeks now and they are doing wonderful.  I had a bit of a scare when we picked them up from the eccentric goat breeding lady.  The lady picked up one goat and Casey picked up the other one and when he put them in the back of the car Belle let out this horrific scream, the goat not the lady.  Casey says I froze up and my eyes were all bugged out..I don't recall this but he is still getting a kick out of it.  I did stop for a second because I thought she was hurt.  She was just pissed we were taking her away from her family. The car ride home.            When we got them home and let them lose onto the back of our property they dashed for the fence and wanted nothing to do with us.  They relaxed more as the day went by and will come up to us and sniff us.  All the work we put into making them a comfy shelter/bed and they wouldn't sleep in it...they are usin...

Sick Days on Homestead?

I know I know it's been like two weeks and trust me I would have rather been blogging than what I was dealing with, the cold from hell.  I've had colds before who hasn't, but this isn't like any other cold it has like super powers.   It started on Memorial day with lil man just having an itty bitty cough, next day full cold and since it's trickled down the whole family.  Little lady was second, then myself, and now it has taken over poor Papa.  Of course when it took over me it was the beginning of Papa's work week.  Being a mom is a hard job but when you're sick and the kids are sick it becomes ten times worse plus you add the chores of the homestead and it feels like I'm being asked to climb a mountain. Plants keeping growing even when we're sick.      I've found myself jealous at times of some of the bigger homestead/farms we follow on Instagram until I felt like I was dying then I was so happy we're just starti...

Long Story Short

Well its been well over a year since I last showed my face on here and I'm not sure where the time went. Last year was full of changes some good and some not so great.  But I won't bore you with the specifics, let's just say hello again and see what's new.      The biggest change of all is our new business venture, metal signs and decor. We take sheets of steel and turn them into signs, ornaments, home decor and even brackets using a plasma table.  Deciding on that purchase was life changing and one of the many reasons life was in the fast lane these last 18 months.  I had no idea what we were getting into or what the response would be, but so far we've had positive feedback. Plasma table hard at work, cutting some steel.      We've done some shows, selling our metal art and now we've got an online shop on etsy to check it out click here,  along with selling locally at The Coop de Ville and Forged n Found....
