Checking Things off the List Even With 2 Kids

Watch out when our calendar tells us what to do, we get it done.  It does get difficult with two small kiddos but we've come up with some unique ways of involving them so we can accomplish some not so kid friendly tasks.  This week we got so close to finishing the fence, about 75% of it is complete.  With so many rainy days lately we were thrilled to have the sun come out for even just one day.  Since we knew only one day would be good for fence building we brought in reinforcements for the kiddos, the homestead NiNi (my mom).  Being the assistant to the muscle requires all my attention and with one of our kids being under two I'm constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure she isn't endangering her life.  With NiNi's help Papa can have all my attention and the kids are safe. Getting the gate set into place.      No unexpected plans came up so we were able to get to the beginning process of building the greenhouse.  A trip into Lowe's and we lef

Balance is Key on the Homestead

All we wanted to do was put up a fence you wouldn’t think it would be so hard but calling 811 was a pain in our booty.  We needed to dig some big holes for the posts and papa had to say that he thought that there were possibly power lines in line where we were going to dig.  After that all I could hear was that darn commercial “call before you dig to be safe”.  The hubby put the work order in online and we had to wait 48 hours for the utility companies to come and find their lines.  Well two days came and went and no one showed up, I immediately regretted following the rules but that’s what I do.  I called and asked why it hadn’t been done and we got the reason that we didn’t give them good enough directions to our marked address.  I didn’t know it would be so hard for them to find our house, well they finally were able to locate us and the lines and we were able to move on with our fence project. Look at my favorite people working so hard.      The fence is coming a

Let the Growing Begin

Growing season has begun and my dining room corner has become our temporary greenhouse.  Trying to start seeds in the rain with the kiddos running around can be somewhat challenging and not very productive.  At times I found myself getting frustrated when every 2 minutes or so I hear "mom watch this, mom watch this", but then I would turn around and see lil man sliding down a muddy hillside with an enormous smile and it made me realize I have to go with the flow.  Sometimes we are constantly trying to check things off our chore list that we forget we need to be flexible and goof off.  On my own I was able to get half a tray of seeds started so I waited for our weekend with Papa to get the rest done. Of course before I could get started I had to clean up chicken poop, thanks ladies.      Planting goes so much faster when there's two people.      Since we don't have a long growing season I try to get our tomatoes started early so they have plenty

I'm a Seed Hoarder

The garden planning is a continuous process and I've made more progress on it.  Remember how I organized my seed album, well at least I thought I had.  We were hanging out in the garage and I found my plastic bin I take to the garden when we plant and I had forgotten that that's where my main stash of seed packets were.  That evening while we caught up on our tv shows on Hulu I laid out all the newly discovered packets and went over my order list.  As it turns out I've got more seeds than I knew so I won't need to shell out as much cash or what will probably happen is I'll find other seeds to spend it on.  My eyes become bigger than our garden capacity when I'm looking at all the pretty pictures of what could be in my garden.  I did place my first order of seeds through Territorial seed company.  I'm a bargain shopper and am always looking for sales or coupons so I've found out that when you place an order they send you a coupon.  The last few years
