Balance is Key on the Homestead

All we wanted to do was put up a fence you wouldn’t think it would be so hard but calling 811 was a pain in our booty.  We needed to dig some big holes for the posts and papa had to say that he thought that there were possibly power lines in line where we were going to dig.  After that all I could hear was that darn commercial “call before you dig to be safe”.  The hubby put the work order in online and we had to wait 48 hours for the utility companies to come and find their lines.  Well two days came and went and no one showed up, I immediately regretted following the rules but that’s what I do.  I called and asked why it hadn’t been done and we got the reason that we didn’t give them good enough directions to our marked address.  I didn’t know it would be so hard for them to find our house, well they finally were able to locate us and the lines and we were able to move on with our fence project.

Look at my favorite people working so hard.

The fence is coming along perfectly papa put in most of the posts and then he yanked the telephone poles up with Colonel Mustard for the first gated driveway.  The hubby man hugged the poles and rolled them into the holes, the cement got mixed in the wheelbarrow and down the hole it went.  Once that was done we laid out all the fence boards and one by one they went up.  Fencing has become our newest family activity.  Papa is the muscle, back and skills and we hand him tools and get in the way at times.  Everyone joins in and helps, even our little lady.  You wouldn’t think a tiny little tot could help but she gets right in there and picks up fence boards and hands them to her papa, the look on his face is full of love.  Somehow our estimation on the number of boards we needed was not correct and now we must return to the home improvement store.

There's more than one way to move a gigantic pole.

Oh so many fence boards and we still need more.

The following day we celebrated Valentine’s day and got another telephone pole in the ground.  I wanted to do something fun with the hardening cement so we all picked a rock and placed it around the pole with our first initial and the year.   Now we just have to wait for the cement to cure and we can complete the project next week, keep your fingers crossed nothing gets in our way.  I'm quite impressed with the way it's looking so far.  With the rest of our week we went for a short drive and spent a few hours sledding.  I stood on the sidelines and took pictures while everyone spun and rolled down the hills.  We enjoyed some lunch and put in another half hour to satisfy the kiddos need for playing in the snow.  With all that work and play our house looked like a tornado ripped through it, so once the rain arrived we did the not so thrilling chores of dishes, laundry and picking up the piles of toys.  Our week was quite successful with a good balance of chores and playing, couldn’t have asked for a better week except more of it.  Alright back to the homestead.

Down the hill they go!!

Wow it's coming along beautifully.

Thank You

Since today is Thanksgiving the holiday for acknowledging what we're thankful for, I knew I needed to make a post dedicated to all our supporters. So here it is a letter to each and everyone out there following us on this journey. Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters of Every Type      I'm writing this because I recently did a story on Instagram and I tried tagging all the people who have supported us and mean so much to us. But as soon as I added it I knew there were so many that I hadn't mentioned or wasn't able to tag.  There are some people who aren't on social media, I'm not sure what they do all day. How do they pass the minutes while taking in their morning coffee, who knows. Moving on, I now know how all those Oscar, Grammy and CMA winners must feel when they win and have to thank everyone in about 10 seconds. Anyhoo...      Thank you to everyone who follows us on Instagram and Facebook. Thank you to all who have taken the time out o

Fall catch up

Well our little lady is 3 months old and we've almost got her figured out. It really would be nice if babies came with manuals or maybe a live in nanny.  The homestead hasn't been getting much attention but that should be changing now.  Our honey do list for the property seems endless at the moment. We had to sit and write everything down and organize it into the coming months and weeks.       There is one project that will be ongoing until spring, raised beds.  We have come to the conclusion that we are tired of putting so many hours of work plus so much sweat into a garden that isn't yielding the harvest it should.  It was our hope to improve our soil but at this point it doesn't seem possible.  Plus the fact that we can't keep intruders from eating our plants.  Now we will be able to bring in beautiful soil and build barriers around the beds.      Some other items on our list include fencing, landscaping, processing firewood, along with every day ma

New baby on the Homestead

It's been way too long since our last blog post.  Lately we've been busy with a newborn, yes getting no sleep or showers and just trying to make the little lady happy...that's the baby not wife.  We worked so hard, that's mostly a lie the hubby worked really hard getting in the garden because my big prego belly was in the way and now it's mostly a bust.  When we found out we were pregnant we should have just pressed the pause button on our big homestead projects but we thought we could do it all, boy were we wrong. The only thing still going is our tomato plants, and what's left of our jalapeno plants.  We lost the battle with the wildlife this year, they've been enjoying all of our sweat and hard work we did of planting them a great buffet of vegetables.  We got a little victory last night when we went down to the garden.  There were three squirrels in the squirrelinator, we've had that darn trap for months now and it's finally starting to pay off
